CHATTOGRAM, Jan 22, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka Capitals opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim broke a new record by a Bangladeshi batter in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) history during his rapid 90 runs knock against Chittagong Kings at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here today.
The knock which won Dhaka the game by eight wickets included seven sixes, which took his overall tally to 29 sixes in 10 matches. By doing so, he went past Towhid Hridoy in hitting most sixes in a season of BPL by a Bangladeshi batter. In the last season, Hridoy hit 24 sixes in 14 matches for Fortune Barishal.
Tanzid is now behind only West Indies great Chris Gayle in hitting most sixes in a single season of BPL. Gayle hit a total of 47 sixes in 2017-18 season for Rangpur Riders. His 32 sixes of 47 came in just two matches. While he hit 18 sixes against Dhaka Dynamites, which is a BPL record in a match, he struck 14 sixes against Khulna Titans. Overall Gayle hit 143 sixes in BPL.
Tanzid will get two more matches in BPL group unless his team qualifies for the playoffs.
It is unlikely that he would six 19 more sixes in coming two matches to erase Gayle’s name from the record book. But Taznid smashed just eight sixes in the first six matches. The rest of his 21 sixes came in the last four matches.
However, Tanzid was unfazed by it, saying that the record is not in his mind, rather he keeps his focus on to win the game.
“I have never thought about it (record). We have two matches coming up which we would have to win. We’ll take it match by match. I am just thinking about winning those two matches,” Tanzid said after the match.
“If the record happens, then its good. But I am always determined to play according to my plan.”
Dhaka lost their first six matches in a row before winning three matches in the last four that gave them a glimmer of hope to play the playoffs.
“To be honest, we are not thinking about playoffs,” Tanzid said. “The main goal is to win the last two matches. If we can win those two matches, there might be some chance. But we don’t want to take pressure on us by thinking about it.”
