WASHINGTON, Jan 26, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - US Speaker Mike Johnson on Saturday invited President Donald Trump to address a joint session of Congress on March 4, for his first formal speech to lawmakers since returning to power.

The Republican speaker, a staunch Trump ally, sent a letter to the president inviting him to "share your America First vision for our legislative future."

Johnson's letter also praised Trump for his "strong leadership and bold action" in the first week of his second term.

"America's Golden Age has begun," the letter said, invoking a phrase used by Trump in his inaugural address on Monday.

Trump's Republican Party holds majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The president has been away from Washington since Friday, using the first trip of his second term to visit the disaster-struck states of North Carolina and California before addressing supporters on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
