SANGSAD BHABAN, March 30, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government is committed to ensuring legal and constitutional protection for those involved in July uprising as outlined in the July National Charter.

Responding to a question from NCP lawmaker Akter Hossen (Rangpur-4), the minister said during the previous interim government, an ordinance titled “The July Mass Uprising Protection and Liability Determination Ordinance, 2026” was promulgated and later presented in the House.

The current government has unanimously agreed to pass this ordinance as a formal bill, he said.

Referring to the July mass uprising, he said that individuals who attacked protesters “like occupying forces” and committed acts of violence faced resistance from the public. Some lost their lives and others were injured during these confrontations, which he described as decisions made “on the battlefield”, he added.

Salahuddin reiterated that the ordinance provides protection for the July fighters.

The minister further stated that two verdicts have already been delivered against Sheikh Hasina and some of her associates, including a former Home Minister. These proceedings were broadcast live.

He emphasised that the judiciary will operate independently, adding that the government will not interfere in legal proceedings.

In this connection, he said, “InshaAllah, all cases of enforced disappearances, murders, killings, and acts of genocide in this country will be brought to justice.”

During the question-answer session in the House, Akter Hossen raised concerns about police misconduct over the past 16 years.

He alleged that some officers had acted outside the law, particularly during July, participating in killings and torture on their own initiative.

Akter asked whether the Ministry of Home Affairs would take departmental action against such officers beyond judicial proceedings.
