
SANGSAD BHABAN, April 16, 2026 (BSS)- Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has said the government is not interfering to defer Bar Council election, rather extending support to hold the election properly.
The minister said this while National Citizens Party (NCP) member in the parliament Akhter Hossen raised the issue after taking floor under point of order.
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal was in the chair.
Referring to Bangladesh Bar Council’s press release on the postponement of its election scheduled for May 19 election due to energy crisis, the opposition lawmaker tried to blame the government to interfere into Bar council election.
Akhter said Bar council was compelled to postpone its scheduled election last night due to government pressure.
“As the Bar Council itself is an autonomous body, so it has postponed its scheduled May 19 election as it coincides with the election of Dhaka Bar.
Election to the Dhaka Bar Association, largest Bar in Asia with 27,760 members, will be held on April 29, 2026, the law minister said.
To hold a trouble-free election of other lawyers’ association, the Bar council itself has taken this decision to change its scheduled election date, said the minister.
The law minister said the Bar council election is in shelve for the last eighteen months and the present government has taken initiative to hold the Bar Council election immediately after coming to power.
Bangladesh Bar Council at a meeting last night has taken the decision unanimously to postpone its May 19 election due to the ongoing energy crisis, a press release of the Bar council said.
Members unanimously agreed to defer the election in view of the severe energy crisis across the country, which could significantly disrupt campaign activities of candidates contesting for seven general seats and seven regional seats, the release said.
The decision followed requests from various bar associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, Dhaka Bar Association, and Chattogram District Bar Association.
