SANGSAD BHABAN, April 23, 2026 (BSS) – Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today said the government will supply natural gas to the Ashuganj Fertilizer Factory from May 1 in order to streamline the input supply for the agriculture sector.
“We have decided to supply gas to the fertilizer factory from May 1 considering the agriculture sector although the decision will hamper the power generation,” he said.
The minister revealed the decision while independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana (Brahmanbaria-2) raised a proposal in the Jatiya Sangsad demanding household gas connectivity in his constituency.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir-Bikram, chaired the session.
Addressing the notice, the energy minister said the country witnessed gas shortage since 2016 and that’s why the gas pressure has been reduced in the household gas lines and the industrial gas line also.
“Due to this situation, we are supplying as much as gas to the industries only for production purpose,” he added.
The immediate past fascist government did not carry out exploration of gas in the country. But the present government after coming to power has formally started work through strengthening the BAPEX, he added.
“If we are successful in gas exploring than we will be able to resume the household gas connectivity and even would be able to increase the gas pressure in the gas line,” the minister said.
Acknowledging the minister’s speech, Rumeen Farhana said the previous government did not take any initiative to explore the energy for the last fifteen years. Even they do not strengthen the BAPEX, he added.
She informed the House that deep gas well drilling has begun from April 19 and it will add 15 million cubic feet gas to the national grid daily as it will take nearly seven months to drill the 5.6 kilometer deep gas well which will play vital role in the energy sector of the country.
The independent lawmaker also urged the government to start fertilizer production in the Ashuganj Fertilizer Factory through restoring the gas supply as the production of the factory now remained suspended due to gas shortage.
