RANGPUR, Aug 28, 2025 (BSS) - A court here has sentenced a couple to 14 years in prison for possession of counterfeit Bidi band-rolls, in a verdict delivered on Wednesday afternoon.
Judge Md Moshiur Rahman Khan of the Rangpur Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court pronounced the sentence in the presence of the accused -- Bulbul Islam, 28, and his wife Rowza Begum, 23 - hailed from the Chandan Kuthi area under Haragachh Metropolitan Police Station.
The court also imposed a fine of Taka 10,000 on each convict, in default of payment, to suffer an additional two months in jail.
According to court sources, the couple was apprehended on January 2, 2021, in possession of a significant quantity of counterfeit Bidi band-rolls. A case was subsequently filed against them under the Special Powers Act at Haragachh Metropolitan Police Station.
Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court. After thorough hearings, the court found the duo guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
About the verdict, Additional Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abdul Hadi Belal said, "The charges against the accused were proven beyond doubt. We are satisfied with the court's decision."
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the judiciary to clamp down on the illegal trade and circulation of counterfeit goods.
