One gets life term for murdering money lender in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Aug 31, 2025 (BSS) - A court has sentenced a small businessman Farid 
Mia to life imprisonment for killing a moneylender Sirajul Islam in Maliatari 
Madhyapara village of Kawnia upazila of Rangpur nearly eight years ago.
 
Senior District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur Fazle Khoda Md Nazir delivered 
the verdict in presence of the convict in the courtroom on Sunday afternoon. 
 
In the verdict, the court ordered a fine of Taka 10,000 to convict Farid Mia 
and an additional six months' imprisonment in default. 

In addition, the court sentenced him to three years' imprisonment under 
Section 201 of the Penal Code and ordered a fine of Taka 5,000 and an 
additional two months' imprisonment in default. 

 
The court acquitted Mishti Begum Mini, the wife of convict Farid Mia, in this 
case. 

Later, the accused was sent to Rangpur Central Jail under strict police 
guard.

According to the prosecution, accused small trader Farid Mia had financial 
transactions with Sirajul Islam, a resident of Maliatari Maddhyapara under 
Sarai Union of Kawnia Upazila in Rangpur district.

For this reason, Farid Mia owed Sirajul Islam another Taka 70,000 even after 
giving him four decimals of the land through the registry.

Sirajul Islam often went to the accused's house to collect the dividends of 
that money. 

At night on December 17, 2017, accused Farid Mia called Sirajul Islam over 
the phone to his house and killed him as planned previously. 

The next day, Farid Mia dug a hole in the kitchen floor of his house and 
buried the body. 
 
Later, Mobina Begum, wife of deceased Sirajul Islam filed a murder case with 
Kawnia Police Station in this incident. The police submitted a charge sheet 
to the court after investigation.

 
After taking the testimony of 20 witnesses and conducting cross-examination 
during the long hearing of the case, the court found Farid Mia guilty and 
announced the verdict today. 

Rangpur Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Aftab Uddin appeared for the state 
and senior lawyer Advocate Shahid Kamal Ibne Khatib appeared for the accused.
