DHAKA, Apr 12, 2026 (BSS) - Former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, has been released on bail from Kashimpur Female’s Central Jail on Sunday evening.

“She was freed at 6:30pm after verification of the bail documents upon those arrival at the prison,” Senior Jail Superintendent of the prison Mst. Kawalin Nahar told BSS tonight.

Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court granted bail to Chaudhury in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station.

The case includes allegations of violence, vandalism, and attempted murder linked to unrest during a July Uprising.

The bail was approved by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain following a petition from the defence.

On the last Tuesday, the same court had rejected a remand plea and ordered her to be sent to jail.

Chaudhury was arrested early Tuesday morning from a residence in Dhanmondi by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Officials stated that the release process was completed in accordance with legal procedures after confirming the authenticity of the bail order.
