Man to die in Mymensingh murder case

MYMENSINGH, Sept 8, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing a woman in the city's Akua Jubilee Quarter area in 2022.

The court also fined convict, Hridoy Mia, 29, son of Joynal Mia of Akua Jubilee Quarter area under Mymensingh Sadar Upazila, Taka 1 lakh. 

Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Md. Shamsuddin pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

According to prosecution, Sathi Akter, 38, was stabbed to death at her rented residence in Akua Jubilee Quarter on the night of September 23, 2022. Between around 2.00am and 5.00am, Hridoy knocked on the door of Sathi's residence. After she opened the door, he allegedly attacked her repeatedly with a sharp weapon, leaving her dead on the spot.

Sathi's younger sister, Mosammat Shiuly Akter, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station on September 24. Two people were named in the case, while five to six unidentified persons were also accused.

Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Hridoy as the sole accused on October 30, 2023.

Investigation Officer and Sub-Inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station Mehedi Hasan said Hridoy was arrested on September 24, a day after the incident. Hridoy later gave a confessional statement before the court on September 25.

According to case details, Hridoy had an altercation with Sathi over allegedly harassing her over mobile phone, in this regard Sathi had also filed a written complaint with the police against him on the day before the incident. 

The prosecution said the murder took place over the dispute.

The court examined testimonies of 13 witnesses during the trial.

Public Prosecutor of the District Judge's Court Anwar Aziz confirmed the matter.
