DHAKA, Nov 22, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) will remain closed for 15 days due to safety concerns following recent earthquakes and students have been instructed to vacate all residential halls by 5 pm on Sunday.

The decision came from an emergency virtual meeting of the DU Syndicate held today with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan in the chair, according to a press release.

Members of the Syndicate attended the meeting, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Principal of Dhaka Medical College, the Acting Director of the Planning and Development Office, the Acting Controller of Examinations and the Acting Chief Engineer.

The Syndicate reviewed the physical and psychological distress experienced by students after the earthquake and subsequent tremors, giving priority to their overall safety. It also analyzed assessments from BUET experts, as well as inputs from DU's Planning and Development Office and the Chief Engineer.

According to their evaluations, a detailed inspection of all residential halls is urgently required, followed by a comprehensive risk assessment and necessary renovation work. To enable this process, the halls must be fully evacuated.

The meeting therefore decided to suspend all classes and examinations and ordered the evacuation of all residential halls. Provosts have been asked to ensure the halls are vacated by 5 pm on Sunday.

University offices, however, will remain open as usual.
