DHAKA, Jan 16, 2026 (BSS) - Recalling the life of three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul said, “For Bangladesh to thrive, it must recognise and embrace her legacy.”

Speaking at a civic memorial meeting in honour of the former BNP chairperson at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building this afternoon, Asif Nazrul reflected on his experiences supporting Begum Khaleda Zia during her lifetime.

“When she was alive, I attended various programmes in her support and often said, if Begum Zia remains well, Bangladesh will be well. I believe she is now at peace. But is Bangladesh doing well? Will it thrive? To ensure it does, we must embrace Khaleda Zia’s legacy.”

He criticised the judicial treatment Khaleda Zia faced, calling one case against her “shocking and absurd.” He recalled how she was deeply hurt by court proceedings and unfair judgments, despite her honesty and integrity.

He described her as principled, selfless, patriotic, tolerant, and strong-willed.

The law adviser added, “Today, it feels good that we can openly express our love for Begum Khaleda Zia. Thanks to freedom and courage, people can express both love and criticism. That is why a leader finds a place in the hearts of people, even when others are exiled.”

The memorial programme included the presence of former Chief Justice Syed JR Mudassir Husain as chair, with hosts Ashraf Kaiser and Kazi Jesin. Distinguished citizens, researchers, doctors, teachers, religious leaders, and representatives from hill communities and various professions attended, among others.
