Bangladesh Navy takes over NIOHC chairmanship

DHAKA, Feb 13, 2025 (BSS) - The 24th meeting of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) was held in Bangkok, Thailand from February 11 to 13.

A two-member delegation of Bangladesh Navy, led by Assistant Chief of the Navy (Operations) and Chairman of the National Hydrographic Committee, Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, participated in the meeting, said a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) today.

At the NIOHC meeting, commission's member countries Egypt, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom took part along with six associate member countries, three observer countries and various international organizations.

The meeting discussed in detail on the improvement of hydrographic activities, increasing regional cooperation, the role of hydrography in expanding the blue economy, future work plans and the importance of hydrography in safe navigation.

In addition, the role of hydrography in achieving maritime security and sustainable management of marine resources and Sustainable Development Goal-14 (Life in Water) was discussed.

On the closing day of the 24th meeting of the Commission, the Bangladesh Navy took over the responsibility of the NIOHC Chairmanship from the Thai Navy for the period of 2025-2027 with the unanimous consent of the member states.

The election of the Bangladesh Navy as the Chairman of the NIOHC is an important milestone. This is an expression of Bangladesh Navy's commitment to enhance regional cooperation, enhance hydrographic capabilities to ensure safe and efficient shipping.

As the Chairman, Bangladesh Navy will play an important role in formulating regional hydrographic policies and promoting sustainable maritime development. This achievement of the Navy will further enhance Bangladesh's image in the international arena.
