DHAKA, Feb 15, 2025 (BSS) – A total of 15 families, out of 28 who were forced to flee their villages in mid-2022 due to the armed activities of the Kuki-Chin, have returned to their homes in Baklai Para of Thanchi Upazila, Bandarban, with the assistance of the Bangladesh Army.

“After nearly 23 months, 15 families comprising 81 members have returned to their homes on February 14 as security situation became stable following a successful joint operation,” said an ISPR press release.

Earlier in mid-2022, a significant number of residents were forced to flee their villages due to the armed activities of the Kuki-Chin National Front (Bawm Party), a militant group operating in the Ruma, Thanchi, and Rumaungchhari areas of Bandarban.

The insurgents used to engage in extortion, impose unlawful demands, and reportedly use civilians as human shields during clashes with security forces, it said, adding, “In search of safety, the affected families endured extreme hardship, taking refuge in remote hills and forests while facing hunger and constant fear”.

To support the returning families, the Bangladesh Army organized a midday meal and provided essential ration supplies, read the release.

Besides, a medical camp was set up to ensure access to healthcare services. Recognizing the disruption to education, the army also distributed educational materials to children and introduced tuition fee support to restore the local schooling system.

The Bangladesh Army has reaffirmed its commitment to repatriating all displaced families affected by insurgent violence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The military's efforts aim to ensure the fundamental rights of these communities and provide them with a secure and stable living environment.
