DHAKA, March 27, 2025 (BSS) - A special court here today declared BNP leader Engineer Ishraque Hossain the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Judge Md Nurul Islam of Dhaka Election Tribunal pronounced the judgment, cancelling the result of the DSCC polls held in 2020. It also canceled the gazette notification that declared Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh winner in mayoral post of that election.

Confirming the matter to BSS, Ishraque's lawyer Taherul Islam Tauhid said the BNP leader filed a case on March 3, 2020, pleading to cancel the 2020 DSCC polls and its result over irregularities, terming those as unacceptable.

Eight officials concerned, including then Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, returning officer Md Abdul Baten, and DSCC Mayor Fazle Noor Taposh were made respondents in the case.

The Dhaka South and North City Corporations Polls were held on February 1, 2020, where Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam won from south and north respectively. The Election Commission issued the gazette notification over the polls results on February 2, 2020.
