23 cases filed at ICT over July-August crimes, enforced disappearances

DHAKA, March 27, 2025 (BSS) - The recently reconstituted ICT has so far received more than 300 allegations over alleged genocides and crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising and incidents of enforced disappearances carried out by the ousted government, and 23 cases have been filed over those allegations.

"We have received more than 300 allegations over genocides, crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising, Shapla Chattar Massacre on May 5, 2013, incidents of enforced disappearances carried out by the former government. Former senior officials, policymakers, Awami League leaders, activists, and cadres were accused in the allegations," International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told BSS.

The prosecutor further said 23 miscellaneous cases have been filed so far in these connections and arrest warrants were issued against 145 people.

"Around 50 accused have so far been arrested in connection of the cases filed with the ICT," he added.

The government on October 14, 2024, reconstituted the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) by appointing Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder as the new chairman. The other members of the tribunal are- Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood and retired District and Sessions Judge Md Mohitul Haq Anam Chowdhury.

It issued arrest warrant against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others on October 17 on charges of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising.
