DHAKA, May 7, 2025 (BSS)- Department of Environment (DoE) today conducted drives at Shyampur Kodomtoli industrial area to prevent discharge of polluted wastes into the Buriganga River.

During the drive the monitoring team found the industries discharging wastes into the Buringanga River through pipes. The team collected some sludge of wastes from the spot.

The drive was jointly conducted by DoE Monitoring and Enforcement unit, Dhaka Research Laboratory and DoE’s Dhaka Metropolitan Office.

“During the drive two dyeing factories were found discharging wastewater directly into the drain and keep their Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) closed,” a PID handout said.

After learning about the visit of the monitoring team, the authorities of the factories started the ETPs, the handout noted.

According to local sources, there are about 49 dyeing and washing factories in the area. Regular monitoring on roaster basis is required to prevent waste disposal in the river and ensure proper functioning of ETPs.

Environment Department director Syed Farhad Hossain said they will formulate action plan by discussing the matters with the factory owners' association, Dhaka WASA and City Corporation.

The collected samples will be tested in the lab and legal action will be taken against the factories after an enforcement hearing, he said.
