DHAKA, Aug 4, 2025 (BSS) - A three-day Regional Consultation Meeting on the "Promotion of Regenerative Agriculture in SAARC Member States" commenced virtually today under the auspices of the SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC), with active participation from all member states.

The consultation, which will continue until August 6, brings together delegates from SAARC countries, representatives of agricultural research organizations, universities and international institutions to deliberate on strategies for advancing regenerative agriculture across South Asia, said a press release here.

Additional Foreign Secretary (SAARC and BIMSTEC) of Bangladesh Abdul Motaleb Sarker attended the opening session as chief guest.

In his remarks, he underscored the urgency of restoring soil health and biodiversity in the region through the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices.

"The SAARC Agriculture Centre should take the lead in this initiative, integrating digital tools and practical strategies to promote sustainability in agriculture," he said.

Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid, Director of SAC, chaired the session and delivered the welcome address, reiterating SAC's commitment to fostering sustainable and resilient farming systems in the region.

"Regenerative agriculture not only addresses environmental degradation but also strengthens long-term agricultural productivity," he noted.

Tanvir Ahmad Torophder, Director (ARD & SDF) at the SAARC Secretariat in Nepal, joined the session as Special Guest.

He emphasized the economic feasibility of regenerative agriculture, noting that "this approach enhances soil and environmental health while ensuring financial gains for farmers."

He called for a collaborative regional framework to scale up these practices.

The opening day also included country-wise presentations, where nominated scientists and focal point representatives from SAARC member states shared national perspectives, challenges and initiatives related to regenerative farming.

The consultation aims to promote regional cooperation, policy alignment and knowledge sharing to restore degraded soils, enhance biodiversity and develop climate-resilient agri-food systems throughout South Asia.
