DHAKA, Aug 11, 2025 (BSS)- The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has exempted foreign nationals working in Bangladesh from filing income tax returns online.

With this new inclusion, the number of categories which would be exempted from filing compulsory e-return is five.

The other four categories are Senior citizens aged 65 years or above, Physically challenged or taxpayers with special needs (upon submission of valid certification), Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad; and Legal representatives filing returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers.

A new special order has been issued in this connection today signed by NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan.

On August 3, the government made submission of income tax returns online mandatory for all individual taxpayers.

However, the NBR clarified that these exempted individuals may still opt to file returns online if they wish.

The order also noted that, in case of technical difficulties with registration in the e-return system, any individual taxpayer (except those exempted) may apply to the concerned Deputy Tax Commissioner by October 31, 2025, stating valid reasons for traditional submission of the return.

Upon approval of the relevant Additional or Joint Tax Commissioner, such taxpayers will be allowed to submit their returns in paper form, it said.
