DHAKA, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today called upon all nationalist forces to unite in the spirit of the 7th November to build a strong democracy in the country.

"Protecting national independence and sovereignty is extremely urgent at this moment," he said in a message issued on the eve of 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day.'

The BNP Acting Chairman said that the rise of anti-hegemonic nationalist politics in the country was ushered in by the Sepoy-People's Revolution on November 7, 1975.

"The Sepoy-People's Revolution on November 7, 1975, in the history of Bangladesh is not merely a turning point but the genesis of anti-hegemonic nationalist politics in this land," he added.

Extending greetings and congratulations to the countrymen on the 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day', the BNP Acting Chairman said, "The nation's sovereignty was protected through the Sepoy-People's Revolution. On this day in 1975, the soldiers and the populace, fueled by patriotism, took to the streets with the pledge of safeguarding national independence and reviving democracy. Thus, the historic revolution of November 7 is immensely significant."

Tareque Rahman further said that the ruling group after independence, for its own self-interest, pushed the country into the grip of hegemony. The objective was to cling to power indefinitely, which led to the killing of democracy through the formation of the one-party BAKSAL rule. "The BAKSAL government, adopting extremely undemocratic and fascist methods, snatched away the legitimate rights of the people."

He continued that during this dire national crisis, on November 3, 1975, conspirators imprisoned the Proclaimer of Great Independence Ziaur Rahman and his family in the cantonment. In this profound national crisis, the fearless soldiers and the surging crowds came together on the streets on November 7, resulting in a unique expression of solidarity to protect national independence, and the Proclaimer of Independence Ziaur Rahman was freed.

Tarique said that this change of scene, under the leadership of President Zia, instilled new vitality in the country, and democracy was unfettered, firmly establishing the freedom of speech, expression, and opinion. Peace returned to the minds of the people.

"However, the domestic agents of the hegemonic forces, viewing President Zia as an impediment to their objectives, brutally assassinated him at the Chittagong Circuit House in 1981. Even though Zia embraced martyrdom, people inspired by his ideals remain united and firmly resolved to defend the nation's independence and democracy." he added.

Mentioning the brutal activities of fascist Awami League, he said, "Once again, the Awami fascists seized state power through covert conspiracy, destroying democracy for nearly 16 years."

Tarique Rahman claimed that the nation's sovereignty was weakened day by day due to their submissive policies. He accused the Awami fascist government of suppressing pro-democracy activists with horrific cruelty, establishing a terrifying reign of corruption and misrule, including the use of Aynaghar (secret detention centers), enforced disappearances, murders, and extrajudicial killings.

The BNP Acting Chairman also lamented that the 'Symbol of Democracy,' Begum Khaleda Zia, was imprisoned for many years without a valid reason.

He said that the fascists were compelled to flee the country due to the magnificent self-sacrifice of the students and the people on August 5. He believes the path to the liberation of democracy has now broadened for the people.

Tarique Rahman said that to establish the ultimate practice of democracy, it is imperative to ensure people's fundamental human rights, which are indispensable for democracy, and to hold a free and fair election.

He also called for the establishment of justice and good governance in society.
