DHAKA, Nov 16, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that the interim government is working to bring the country's political structure to a certain point.

He said, “Following the July Uprising, we have been unable to fully grasp the aspirations and desires of the people. The interim government was formed with the support of all of us, and it has been working to shape the political structure to a defined point. However, it is still too early to say how far this aligns with the hopes and aspirations of the people.”

Fakhrul made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking the 49th death anniversary of the leader of the oppressed, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.

BNP organised the discussion at the National Press Club, with BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu presiding.

Referring to the urgent need for a national election, Mirza Fakhrul said, “We have repeatedly said that elections are the only path through which we can begin the transition to democracy and attempt to reflect the people’s aspirations.”

He alleged that certain quarters are deliberately attempting to sabotage the national election, scheduled to be held in the first half of February 2026.

“Some groups and certain quarters are intentionally trying to create uncertainty in Bangladesh. They want to obstruct and delay the election by putting forward various demands.”

The senior BNP leader called upon all political parties to support the electoral process without further delay and to create the opportunity for the people to elect their representatives.

Speaking about the life of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Fakhrul said Bhashani was an exceptional politician in the subcontinent.

“He was a politician who never sought personal comfort or material wealth. He spent his entire life struggling for the farmers, labourers, blacksmiths, potters, and the hardworking people of this country,” he said.

The BNP leader added, “His life was simple and humble; he lived like an ordinary man. This is evident from his mat-woven hut in Tangail.”

Fakhrul concluded by saying that Bangladesh must acknowledge the debt owed to Maulana Bhashani. His books and biography should be read, and his ideals should be followed.
