THAKURGAON, Dec 28, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that a vested quarter is hatching conspiracies from behind to destabilise the country.

Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with the Islamic scholars (Alam-Ulemas) at the Human Welfare Council Training Centre ground on Goreya Road in the district town this afternoon.

Noting that the country is passing through a critical period with various rumours, confusion and movements emerging, Mirza Fakhrul said it appears that some people are conspiring from behind to create instability in the country. "We must remain cautious at this time so that we don't once again slide into darkness," he said.

He stressed that the ensuing 13th Jatiya Sangsad election is extremely important and warned that there are attempts to derail it. "We must ensure that none can thwart this election," he said.

Calling for unity, he said internal divisions must be avoided as conspirators would take advantage of any rift, harming both the country and its people.

Addressing the Ulemas, the BNP Secretary General said the upcoming election would determine who would govern the country alleging that efforts are underway to foil the polls.

He claimed that over the last 15 years, democratic institutions were destroyed, the economy was weakened while the banking sector was looted to enrich a handful of people.

Mirza Fakhrul said he himself had been imprisoned for 11 times for demanding democracy, standing for truth and calling for an end to repression against Islamic scholars. "At that time none of us felt safe. People were afraid to move on the streets, fearing they could be picked up and branded as militants," he added.

He said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was the first to include "Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim" in the Constitution and asserted that BNP believes no law should be enacted beyond the Qur'an and Sunnah. Rejecting allegations that BNP opposes Qur'an and Sunnah-based laws, he said the party has always upheld Islamic values.

Describing Islam as a religion of peace, he said BNP wants to build a new Bangladesh through a peaceful election. He alleged that propaganda is being spread against BNP despite the party's role in safeguarding the religious values and culture of the country's Muslim majority.

Referring to the 2024 mass uprising, he alleged that scores of students were shot dead and Dhaka was soaked in blood. He also claimed that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was kept in prison for six years on false charges without proper medical care or humane conditions.

Recalling the history, Mirza Fakhrul said there was little scope to speak about Islam during the rule of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, while President Ziaur Rahman later brought Islamic scholars to the forefront at the state level and worked for unity of the Muslim Ummah.

Regarding the party's election manifesto, he said that if BNP comes to power, monthly allowances would be provided to imams, khatibs and muazzins of mosques across the country to enhance their social status and living standards.

Mirza Fakhrul also paid deep respect to the martyrs of the July-August movement, including Shaheed Osman Hadi and Abu Sayeed.

Seeking prayers from the ulemas, Mirza Fakhrul also requested them to pray for the recovery of ailing BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

District BNP general secretary Poigam Ali, Khatib of Thakurgaon Boro Mosque Maulana Khalilur Rahman and noted Islamic scholar Maulana Hafez Rashid spoke at the meeting.

From the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul announced that he would submit his nomination papers on Monday as a candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad election.
