DINAJPUR, March 23, 2026 (BSS) - In a rare display of grassroots medical service during the Eid holidays, Social Welfare Minister and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof. AZM Zahid Hossain has been personally attending to the patients in his home village in northern Bangladesh.
The minister has been receiving and treating patients at his ancestral home in Matihara village of Nabiganj upazila in Dinajpur District, where large numbers of people from surrounding rural areas gathered seeking medical advice.
According to locals, the minister began seeing patients on Sunday evening and continued late into the night, before resuming consultations again on Monday morning from around 10am.
Speaking to reporters, Prof. Zahid said patients arrived with a wide range of health issues, including common colds, fevers, cancer-related complications, neurological conditions, urological problems and heart diseases.
The physician said he spent hours examining patients, providing prescriptions, and advising them on necessary tests and specialist referrals.
“From 10am, there has been a steady flow of patients in front of my house. I saw patients until around 3am yesterday, and resumed again this morning,” he said, adding that he felt “deeply satisfied” to be able to provide care to rural people during the holiday period.
The minister noted that many villagers also shared broader social and health concerns during consultations, which he tried to address where possible.
Prof. Zahid, who was elected to parliament from Dinajpur-6 constituency in the recent general election, represents a largely rural and remote region comprising Birampur, Nawabganj, Ghoraghat and Hakimpur upazilas.
