SYLHET, May 16, 2026 (BSS) - Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury today said the government is planning to launch a special housing and investment assistance project for expatriates to make investments safer and easier.

The minister said this at an event titled "Globalizing Sylhet" held at the Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort this afternoon.

He said land availability in the country is shrinking, prompting the government to plan modern apartment-based housing instead of plot-based projects, where only expatriates would receive allotments.

The minister said the projects would ensure security for expatriates alongside market facilities, civic amenities, and government protection. He added that the matter has already been discussed with the Prime Minister.

Ariful Haque Chowdhury said the initiative could begin in Sylhet due to the region's strong connection with expatriates.

He noted that expatriates often face harassment and lengthy delays in obtaining licences and approvals while making investments, forcing many to return disappointed. To address the issue, the government has formed a special cell.

"The government will work on your behalf to ensure that expatriates' investments are 100 percent safe and no time is wasted," he said.

The minister also stressed the need for such initiatives to keep the new generation of expatriates connected to the country, saying it would encourage investment and strengthen family bonds.
