
RAJSHAHI, May 16, 2026 (BSS) - Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu today said there is a need to establish a Sports Science University in the country to meet the demands of the time.
He said Rajshahi is widely known as an education hub, with institutions such as a university, medical college and engineering university contributing to its reputation.
"The proposal that has come today will begin here in Rajshahi. A Sports Science University will be established in Rajshahi. We will take all necessary steps in this regard," he said.
The minister made the remarks at noon while addressing a seminar and reception titled "The Necessity of a Sports Science University in Bangladesh" as the chief guest at Rajshahi College auditorium. The event was organised by Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Physical Education College.
He said the Prime Minister has undertaken various initiatives to promote sports, including the 'Notun Kuri' sports competition to identify and develop young talent. He also noted that a monthly allowance for national athletes has been introduced for the first time in the country's sports history.
Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Physical Education College Principal Md Abdullah Al Mahmud Salam Biplob chaired the event.
Special guests included Shafiqul Haque Milon MP, District Council Administrator Adv Ershad Ali Esha, and Rajshahi College Principal Prof Dr Md Ibrahim Ali.
Prof Dr M Rafiqul Islam, former Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University, presented the keynote address.
Other discussants were former Varendra University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nurul Hossain Chowdhury, Rajshahi University Zia Parishad President Prof Dr Mohammad Habibur Rahman, Jatiyatabadi Shikkhok Forum President Prof Dr Md Abdul Alim, and UTAB Rajshahi University President Prof Dr Md Mamunur Rashid.
At the seminar, papers were presented by Dr. Mostafizur Rahman, Acting Director of the Department of Physical Education at Islamic University, Kushtia, and Sharmin Akter Shanta, ICCR and PhD Fellow at Punjabi University, India.
