TANGAIL, May 26, 2026 (BSS) - Authorities have placed the Jamuna Bridge and the connecting Dhaka-Tangail highway under maximum security and surveillance to manage a massive rush of homebound holidaymakers heading to northern districts for Eid-ul-Azha.
The surge in traffic has multiplied the number of vehicles on the road, prompting the bridge authorities and Tangail District Police to deploy special measures aimed at easing traffic congestion, preventing traveler distress and guaranteeing safe passage.
According to Syed Riaz Uddin, Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, a staggering 53,246 vehicles crossed the bridge over a recent 24-hour period from Sunday midnight to Monday midnight. This massive traffic flow generated a total of Tk 3,77,58,200 in toll revenue. Of the total crossings, 32,186 vehicles were outbound towards North Bengal, yielding Tk 1,96,40,700, while 21,060 vehicles headed into Dhaka, contributing Tk 1,81,17,500.
To maintain continuous traffic flow and minimize delays, the bridge authority is operating 18 toll booths round-the-clock, split evenly with nine booths on each side of the bridge. This includes two dedicated lanes on each side specifically for motorcycles to speed up processing times.
On the law enforcement front, Tangail Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar confirmed that 1,000 police personnel have been stationed at critical points along the highway. In addition to specialized traffic surveillance on the bridge itself, police patrols have been intensified across key locations to deter crimes like theft, snatching and robbery.
Mobile courts are also actively operating along the highway. These courts are tasked with regulating the movement of livestock trucks, removing unfit vehicles from the road and cracking down on transport operators charging excessive fares to desperate passengers.
