Jamaat leader ATM Azhar's appeal verdict tomorrow

DHAKA, May 26, 2025 (BSS) - The verdict on the petition of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam seeking his release from the death sentence in the case of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War will be held tomorrow.

After hearing the appeal of the case on May 8, a seven-judge full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed fixed the date.
 
The petition has been scheduled for verdict tomorrow with priority under item number one of the agenda of the Appellate division.

Earlier, lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir stand for ATM Azhar in the Supreme Court while lawyer Gazi MH Tamim stand for the prosecution and Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque for the state.

On February 26, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court granted Azharul Islam's review and leave to appeal. The hearing on the appeal began accordingly.

The International Crime Tribunal sentenced ATM Azharul Islam to death on December 30, 2014 for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
 
After hearing the appeal against this verdict, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld ATM Azharul Islam's death sentence on October 31, 2019. Later on July 19, 2020, ATM Azharul Islam filed an application seeking review of the verdict.
