DHAKA, May 27, 2025(BSS) - A court here today re-fixed July 14 for submitting the probe report on the abduction of former member of parliament (MP) from Jhenaidah-4 constituency Anwarul Azim Anar.
Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Shaheen Reza set the date afresh as the Detective Branch of Police couldn't submit the report as per earlier scheduled date today.
Anar, a three-time MP and also former president of Kaliganj upazila unit of Awami League, went to India on May 12 on a personal visit to undergo treatment. He went missing on May 13 after going out of his place of residence in Kolkata's Borah Nagar area.
On May 18 last year, Gopal Chandra Biswas, a friend of Anar lodged a general Diary (GD) with Borah Nagar police station under Kolkata Police.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested a number of suspects for the abduction and murder of Anar in Kolkata. They include Syed Amanullah Aman alias Shimul Bhuiyan, Faysal Ali Saji alias Tanvir Bhuiyan, Silisti Rahman, Saidul Karim Mintu, general secretary of banned AL Jhenidah district unit, its relief and social welfare secretary Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu alias Gas Babu, Mostafizur Rahman and Faysal Ali.
Among the arrested persons, six people, excepting Saidul Karim Mintu, gave confessional statement under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before the court. All the arrested persons are now behind the bar.
According to the Kolkata police sources, Anwarul was taken to a flat in New Town in Kolkata, where he is believed to be strangled to death and his body was cut into pieces and dumped at different areas by the killers.
The victim's daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin filed the case with the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on 22 May.
