Six sent to jail over DU student Shammo killing

DHAKA, May 28, 2025 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today sent six accused to jail after the end of their remand in a case filed over the killing of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo.

The accused are Tamim Hawlader, 30; Polash Sardar, 30; Samrat Mallik, 28; Hridoy Islam, Sohag, and Robin.

The court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman passed the order after police produced them before the court, appealing to keep them in jail during the investigation.

On May 13, a team from Shahbagh Police Station arrested Tamim, Polash, and Samrat during drives in the city's Green Road and Rajabazar areas.

The Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza placed them on a six-day remand on May 17. Later, they were again placed on a five-day remand on May 23.

Police arrested Sohag, Hridoy, and Robin in the city on Sunday. The following day, they were placed on a two-day remand.

Shammo, a final-year student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and also the literature and publication secretary of the Sir A F Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13.

His brother Shariful Islam filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on May 14.
