Trawler with 39 passengers capsizes in Meghna: 6 missing

NOAKHALI, May 31, 2025 (BSS) – A trawler carrying 39 passengers capsized in the Meghna River in Hatia upazila of the district today.

The accident occurred around 3.45 pm when the trawler was traveling from Bhasan Char towards Karimbazar, Noakhali.

With the help of local fishermen, coast guard and naval police rescued 32 people. Till now, only one body was recovered from the water, while six remain missing.

Witnesses said a trawler carrying 39 passengers started its journey from Bhasan Char in Hatia towards Karimbazar Ghat at 2 pm. The trawler capsized due to inclement weather, just a kilometer away from Karimbazar.

Noakhali Police Superintendent Md. Abdullah Al Faruk confirmed the matter and said Coast Guard, Naval Police and local fishermen have so far rescued 32 people alive and recovered one body. 

The rescue operation is going on till filing of this report.
