DHAKA, June 1, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain today said not only BNP rather 52 political parties want national elections in December next.

“If polls are held in December, it will be beneficial for the Election Commission, the government and the people,” he told a discussion organized by Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Jatiya Press Club here.

He said 52 parties have come together and want elections in December and the names of those parties, names of their leaders, and their statements have been published in the newspapers.

Regarding tomorrow's meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Mosharraf said as the chief adviser invited them they will join it.

“But we are disappointed with the statement he (the chief advisor) made in Japan. Why did he say that only BNP wants elections in Bangladesh? Who doesn’t want elections? Everyone wants election.”

In this connection, he said elections must be held by December this year.

“You are saying that elections will be held by June. What happens before that? The month of Ramadan will be in February, we cannot postpone this Ramadan. Then SSC and HSC examination will be held in April-May, there is no chance of postponing them rather the schools and colleges where these public examinations are held are made polling centers. The government cannot hold elections in April-May. And the monsoon season starts in June. Now, we have seen how much rain there is in May and the monsoon situation across the country. Elections in June are not possible. So, we think elections are possible in December,” he noted.

BNP Standing Committee Member and Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad Convener Professor AZM Zahid Hossain chaired the discussion while Member Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury moderated it.

Leaders of the organizations including academicians, physicians and engineers also spoke.
