KHULNA, June 26, 2025 (BSS) - Sub-Inspector (SI) Sukanta Das was arrested in Chuadanga, amid protest by locals following his release from police custody.

A joint team from the Police Headquarters, Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) and Chuadanga District Police detained him in the Alamdanga area of Chuadanga, confirmed KMP Commissioner Zulfiqar Ali Haider.

Sukanta Das is being brought back to Khulna, where he faced two cases, one at the Khulna Sadar Police Station and another in the Khulna court, the commissioner said.

He stressed that the police are committed to upholding the law impartially. "No one is above the law. Whether the accused is a law enforcement officer or an ordinary citizen, action will be taken," he said, adding that the detainee will be interrogated.

SI Sukanta faced allegations of suppressing student activists and conducting mass arrests during the July uprising. Following the incident, multiple cases were filed against him at both the Khulna court and the Khulna Sadar Police Station.

Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, local residents detained SI Sukanta in the Eastern Gate area of Khulna city and handed him over to Khan Jahan Ali Police Station after allegedly assaulting him.

However, he was reportedly released later that night, prompting public outrage.

In protest of his release, members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the BNP's student wing demonstrated outside the KMP headquarters on Wednesday.

At one point, they locked the main gate of the compound, burned tyres and staged a sit-in on the road in front of the building.

Police officials managed to regain access and exit the premises around 9:30 pm after the protesters eventually dispersed.
