BNP proposed maximum 2-term limit for an individual serving as PM 8 years ago: Khasru

DHAKA, June 26, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said eight years ago BNP gave the proposal that one person cannot serve as prime minister for more than two terms.

He said made the comment at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan political office here following a meeting with European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller.

BNP Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid was present, BNP media cell member Shyrul Kabir Khan said.

Responding to a question, Khasru said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia presented Vision 2030 proposing no one can be the prime minister for more than two terms.

“So, there is no reason to have a consensus on the issue,” he said.

Khasru said during the meeting with EU envoy, the issue of February election was discussed.

“They hoped that Bangladesh will return to the democratic process through quick elections,” he said.

"The European Union works on the problems and rights of our workers in the country. Therefore, they wanted to know about our plans for the livelihood development of Bangladeshi workers," said Khasru.

Stating that the European Union wants to cooperate with the parliament in the future, the BNP leader said, "The European Union has assured us that it will provide all-out cooperation to ensure that the activities of the next parliament are conducted transparently." 

In addition, the issue of conducting the judiciary of Bangladesh in a transparent manner also came up in the meeting, he said.
