DHAKA, June 28, 2025 (BSS)- Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator
Mohammad Ejaz today said the battery-run e-rickshaws, designed by Bangladesh
University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), will be operational on the
Dhaka streets from August next.
"Battery-run e-rickshaws are set to be introduced on a pilot basis in some
areas starting this August. The authorities have planned to expand the
service to other parts of the capital in phases," the DNCC administrator said
while addressing a programme at the DNCC auditorium on Saturday.
"We have given top priority to safety in the design of these vehicles," he
said, adding that only trained drivers will get licenses and an effective
road safety framework will be developed in the city through this system.
Ejaz made this remark while speaking as special guest at the inauguration
ceremony of a trainer training programme to train safety and security to e-
rickshaw drivers.
Earlier in the morning, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor to the Ministry
of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, inaugurated the
programme at the auditorium of Nagar Bhaban.
Local Government Division Secretary Md. Rezaul Maksud Zahedi presided over
the event.
Introducing a well-managed, affordable, eco-friendly, and technology-driven
e-rickshaw system, operating within speed limits, can significantly improve
urban public transportation.
Under the training workshop, 300 selected trainers are being trained as
'master trainers' who will later train the e-rickshaw drivers.
In the first phase, 200 trainers are being trained for three days on June 28,
29 and 30.
A team from the Mechanical Engineering Department of BUET designed the
battery-run e-rickshaw considering transport safety and ease.
According to the design of BUET, the maximum speed of the rickshaws has been
set at 30 kilometers per hour and will be allowed to operate on the lanes
except from the main roads and highways.
On the first day of the training, the participants (trainers) are being
taught the content and presentation techniques. Training practice will be
taught on the second day and the technical aspects of rickshaws and their
maintenance will be trained on the third day.
In the first phase, the training is being conducted simultaneously in 10
regions of the DNCC and DSCC.
This training workshop is ongoing in Gulshan Nagar Bhaban, Uttara Region-1,
Mohakhali Region-3 and Mirpur Regions-2 and 4.
