Memorial meeting on Adv. M I Farooqui held in SC

DHAKA, June 30, 2025 (BSS) - A memorial meeting on the life and works of senior lawyer Advocate M I Farooqui was held at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium here yesterday (Sunday).

Moderated by the Executive Director of the Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust (BLAST) Barrister Sara Hossain, the meeting was jointly organized by the BLAST and M I Farooqui and Associates where Appellate Division Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque was present as the chief guest. 

Among others, Justice Md Ruhul Quddus, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, Retired Supreme Court justice M A Matin, Senior Lawyer Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and its Acting Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, took part in the discussion.

The speakers highlighted different aspects of life and works of veteran lawyer M I Farooqui especially his contributions in protecting human rights, public interest litigations and explanations related to the constitution of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Rezaul Haque said that the cases related to the public interest litigations and judicial activisms were started in the judiciary through M I Farooqui. 

He also contributed a lot in protecting child rights and environment of the country, Justice Rezaul Haque said adding that Farooqui also played a vital role in baring compulsory death penalty in women and children repression cases. 

Remembering his bold step against the eviction of the sex workers, Justice Rezaul Haque said that he (Farooqui) was a towering personality and we became guardian less following his death.

Retired High Court justice Ruhul Quddus said the lawyers should remember Advocate Farooqui for practicing the laws for their own interests. He (Farooqui) also opposed the appointment of retired judges in different government and non- government positions as it hampers the independence of judiciary, justice Ruhul Quddus added.

Attorney General Asaduzzaman said that advocate Farooqui will be alive among us through his works and contributions to the legal profession.

The eminent lawyer Farooqui died of lung cancer on May 3. His prominent books on laws are - Law of Abandoned Property, Citizenship and Nationalities in Bangladesh and Interpreting Vested Properties Law in Bangladesh-A Comprehensive Review.
