BFIU freezes Showkat, family’s accounts for another month

DHAKA, July 30, 2025 (BSS)- The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank (BB) has extended freezing on bank accounts of prominent Chattogram-based businessman and Eastern Bank Limited Chairman Showkat Ali Chowdhury and his family members for another month.

The anti-money laundering agency today directed banks and financial institutions through official letter, affects accounts operated under both personal and business names linked to the family.

In addition to Showkat Ali Chowdhury, the account freeze order applies to his family members — Tasmiya Ambarin, Zarah Namrin, and Md. Zaran Ali Chowdhury. 

The directive has been issued in accordance with the Money Laundering Prevention Rules, 2019, and the financial institutions have been instructed to strictly adhere to those regulations when enforcing the account suspension.
This is a continuation of a previous measure taken by the central bank, which had initially frozen the accounts of these individuals for one month. As the prior order expired, the BFIU has now extended freezing on the accounts for another month.
