SYLHET, Sept 1, 2025 (BSS) - 107th birth anniversary of Commander in Chief of the great liberation war Bangabir General Muhammad Ataul Goni (M A G) Osmani has been observed in the country.
Marking the day, several events were arranged across Sylhet, the birthplace of the legend, over the day.
Following the observances, Osmani Museum organized discussion, prayer session, and award ceremony for an essay competition at the courtyard of the Osmani Museum in Sylhet.
Political leaders, civil society members, and cultural organizations paid homage to the iconic leader, whose strategic vision and leadership played a pivotal role in Bangladesh's struggle for independence in 1971.
Speaking as the chief guest, Ariful Haque Choudhury, Adviser to the BNP Chairperson and former Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation said, "General Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani, known as "Bangabir" (Hero of Bengal), is an unforgettable name in the history of Bangladesh's independence. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Liberation War, it was under his leadership and foresight that the freedom-loving nation became united and marched towards victory."
"Nation still remembers General MAG Osmani with deep respect and gratitude. His immortal contribution will forever remain a shining part of the nation's history of independence. I pray for the eternal peace of Bangabir Osmani's soul," he said.
General Osmani was born on September 1, 1918, in Dirai, Sylhet.
After a long career in the British and Pakistan armies, he emerged as a guiding force during the nation's most critical moment. His courageous decisions, leadership, and organizational skills during the Liberation War led the Bengali people in the right direction.
Advocate Emad Ullah Shahidul Islam, former president of the Sylhet District Bar Association presided over the event.
General Secretary of Sylhet Central Muslim Literary Society Selim Auwal, DGM of Sylhet Fulkoli Food Products Ltd Jasim Uddin Khandaker spoke as the special guests, among others.
The event began with a recitation from the Holy Qur'an by Hafiz Faruq Hossain and Assistant Keeper of the Osmani Museum Md. Mostafizur Rahman delivered the welcome speech.
The programme concluded following special prayers for the departed soul of General M A G Osmani.
