DHAKA, Sept 2, 2025 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today sent Sutrapur Thana Awami Swechasebak League president Sarwar Uddin Mithu, 50, to jail in connection with the killing of student Nadimul Hasan Elem during the July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after police produced the accused before the court and sought a five-day remand.

The court, however, denied the remand plea as the main case documents were not available, and ordered Mithu's immediate incarceration. The next hearing on the police's remand request is scheduled for September 8.

According to case records, 22-year-old Nadimul Hasan Elem, a student of Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College, joined an anti-discrimination student rally in front of Kabi Nazrul Government College on July 19, 2024. During the rally, cadres of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations opened fire on protesters indiscriminately.

Elem sustained a gunshot wound to his left eye. He was rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead. The case was lodged with Sutrapur Police Station on August 22, 2024.
