KHULNA, Nov 20, 2025 (BSS) – Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Distinguished Fellow Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya has called for a stronger and more transparent role from the government, administration, and Election Commission to restore public confidence ahead of the upcoming national elections.

Dr. Bhattacharya stressed that rebuilding trust through openness, integrity, and free discussion has become essential as the country moves toward the inevitable election.

He was speaking at a regional consultation meeting titled “Citizen’s Platform for SDG Implementation in Bangladesh” held at Hotel City Inn here today.

Commenting on development issues, he said the much-discussed prospects for economic advancement in Khulna and the southwestern region of the country have yet to materialize.

He added that a significant tourism industry could be developed around the Sundarbans and the region’s cultural heritage.

Dr. Bhattacharya urged the formulation of a comprehensive regional development plan for Khulna and its inclusion in upcoming election manifestos.

“Candidates contesting from this region must commit to regional development plans in their manifestos. Citizen groups and the media will then ensure accountability during implementation,” he said.

Speaking on port management, he emphasized that efficient port infrastructure is essential for an export-driven economy. While foreign investment may be required for necessary reforms, such investment must follow transparent procedures.

He stressed that reforms and investment are needed, but they must be guided by merit, open consideration, and transparent processes to ensure sustainability.

Civil society representatives presented various local and national demands to election candidates and political parties at the meeting. Their priorities included safe roads, industrial development, reduction of polythene and plastic use and tourism expansion in the Sundarbans.
Among others, political leaders including former BNP central organizing secretary and former MP Nazrul Islam Manju, and Khulna city Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Prof. Mahfuzur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
