DHAKA, Nov 22, 2025 (BSS) - The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) has called for an urgent structural risk assessment of all residential hall buildings, saying students are gripped by extreme panic and uncertainty following recent earthquakes.

The demand was made in a statement issued by DUCSU General Secretary S M Farhad on Saturday night.

Continuing regular academic activities at this moment "is not logical in any way," Farhad said, adding that holding classes and examinations without ensuring student safety amounts to "cruelty."

The DUCSU urged the university administration to immediately inspect all residential halls in coordination with BUET's expert engineers, assess structural risks, and make the findings public for students' awareness.

According to the statement, any buildings or rooms identified as unsafe should be declared abandoned without delay and the students living there must be relocated to safer facilities. Other buildings, they added, should undergo prompt renovations.

The DUCSU leader also proposed a temporary closure of Dhaka University until the assessment is completed and students are shifted from hazardous areas to secure locations. To prevent academic delays, they recommended introducing online classes during the closure and taking special measures to complete postponed examinations quickly once the university reopens.
