DINAJPUR, Dec 8, 2025 (BSS) – A total of 150 tonnes onions have been imported from India through the Dinajpur Hili Land Port.
Officials and importers expect the continued imports to help stabilize the domestic onion market, which has recently seen unusually high prices.
President of the Hili Land Port Import-Exporters Association, Md. Sakhawat Hossain Shilpi, confirmed that as of 2.30 pm on Monday, four trucks carrying onions imported by Messrs. Rubel Enterprise, Messrs. MR Enterprise, and Messrs. Mozammel Haque Enterprise entered Bangladesh through the port. Each truck transported 30 metric tons, totaling 120 metric tons for the day.
Additionally, a separate truck from Rocky Enterprise brought in another 30 metric tons after Sunday evening, bringing the two-day total to 150 metric tons.
Importer Mozammel Haque said that Indian onions are being purchased at the equivalent of Taka 30 per kg. After port taxes and transportation costs, the total import cost rises to around Taka 39 per kg. Monday’s consignments were sold wholesale at Taka 55 per kg, contributing to a significant retail price drop.
“As a result, onions that were sold at Taka 120 per kg at the Hili Land Port two days ago are now selling at around Taka 70 per kg in local markets,” he said.
Another importer, Md. Rubel Hossain, stated that domestic market prices had surged due to syndicate manipulation during the peak season. He said the government’s decision to open imports from India aims to curb such artificial hikes and stabilize prices. He and other importers assured that continued import activity would help maintain a steady onion market in Bangladesh.
