DHAKA, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) -The Cyber Police Center (CPC) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a professional fraudster for impersonating the Home Adviser and attempting to mislead the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi regarding the upcoming national election.

Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Bangladesh Police, CID, Dhaka, Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed the arrest.

The arrested individual has been identified as Md. Shamim Osman (29), son of Md. Shamsul Haque and Supera Begum, a resident of Kishorepur village under Pakuria  in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi district.

He was arrested on January 19, 2026, during a special operation conducted by the CPC’s Cyber Investigation and Operations team in Savar Thana area.

According to CID sources, Shamim Osman sent a WhatsApp message to the Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi while falsely introducing himself as Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

In the message, he deliberately provided misleading and provocative information related to the national election, claiming that no Awami League leader or activist could be arrested in Rajshahi and that no election would be held without the Awami League.

The fraudster also sought information about alleged monthly collection matters and demanded Tk 1 lakh to be sent immediately to his personal bKash account.

Sensing irregularities, the Deputy Commissioner promptly informed the Cyber Police Center. Using advanced information technology and cyber intelligence, the CPC, CID quickly identified and arrested the accused.

Investigations revealed that Shamim Osman is a repeat offender and professional fraudster, with a history of impersonating high-ranking government officials to commit fraud.

An arrest warrant was already pending against him at Bagha Police Station in Rajshahi.

Following legal procedures, he has been handed over to the concerned police station for further action.

CID officials stated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether others were involved in the incident and whether the accused used the identities of other senior government officials to carry out similar fraudulent activities.

The CID reaffirmed its commitment to preventing cybercrime and protecting public officials from digital impersonation and fraud.
