
KHULNA, March 12, 2026 (BSS) - At least 13 people were killed in a tragic head-on collision between a bus and a passenger microbus on the Mongla-Khulna
highway this afternoon.
The accident occurred around 3:00 pm on Thursday in the Belai Bridge area of the highway when a bus of the Bangladesh Navy collided head-on with a
passenger microbus.
According to police, seven passengers of the microbus died on the spot while the rest succumbed to their injuries later at hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Katakhali Highway Police Station Md Zafar Ahmed confirmed the incident.
He said a navy bus coming from Mongla was hit head-on by a microbus travelling towards Mongla from Koyra in Khulna district. The impact left the
microbus completely mangled.
Seven members of the same family, including two infants, died at the scene,
he added.
Talking to BSS, emergency department physician at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) Dr Mehnaz Mosharraf said the hospital initially received the
bodies of seven victims from the same family. Among them were three women, two infants aged below one year, a 13-year-old child and two adult men.
One of the deceased men was identified as Abdur Razzaq, the microbus driver and head of the family.
Sources said the victims included Abdur Razzaq, president of Ward No. 8 unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Mongla municipality, several members of
his family and relatives of his son Sabbir's newly married wife.
Family sources said Razzaq and his relatives had gone to Koyra upazila in Khulna on Wednesday to bring home the bride of his younger son, Sabbir.
After completing the wedding ceremony, they were returning home with the newlywed bride when the fatal accident occurred near Belai Bridge.
Nisarul Islam, brother-in-law of the deceased Razzaq, said several members of the family had travelled to Koyra for the wedding. The sudden news of their
deaths has left the entire family devastated.
Meanwhile, Razzaq's wife fell seriously ill after learning about the deaths of her husband and other family members, family members said.
