DHAKA, Apr 12, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged motorists and pedestrians to strictly adhere to traffic signal rules as part of a step to improve road discipline and modernize traffic management in the capital.

The DMP, in a statement here today said the government has taken steps to bring major intersections in Dhaka under an effective traffic signal system.

In coordination with the city corporations, signal lights have already been installed at key crossings, including Hotel InterContinental, Banglamotor, Hotel Sonargaon, Farmgate Police Box, Bijoy Sarani, Prime Minister’s Office, Jahangir Gate, and Gulshan-1 and Gulshan-2.

Additionally, temporary signal systems have been set up at several locations such as Manik Mia Avenue (west end), Khejurbagan, July Memorial Museum, Mazar Road, Abul Hotel, Mouchak, Ray Shaheb Bazar, and Love Road.

The Dhaka South City Corporation has also installed signal lights at six more intersections—High Court, Kadam Fountain, Matsya Bhaban, Kakrail Mosque, Police Headquarters, and Shahbag—which are expected to be operational soon. Authorities said more intersections will gradually be brought under the signal system.

To ensure pedestrian safety, the DMP has introduced “safe pedestrian signal lights” at several important zebra crossings, including Old Ramna Thana, Ramna Park’s Arunnima Gate, Mirpur College area, Gabtoli Police Box, Rampura, and near Kohinoor Chemical Company.

The DMP issued a set of directives for road users, instructing drivers to obey traffic lights, stop at designated stop lines during red signals, avoid wrong-way driving, and refrain from picking up or dropping off passengers at intersections.

Pedestrians have been advised to use foot over bridges, underpasses, or zebra crossings and to cross roads only when pedestrian signals turn green.

The DMP authority also warned that advanced CCTV cameras are being installed at important intersections to detect violations such as running red lights, blocking lanes, illegal stopping, and unsafe pedestrian crossings.

Legal action will be taken under the Road Transport Act 2018, including fines, imprisonment, and digital prosecution based on video evidence.

According to the law, violations may result in fines of up to Tk 10,000, imprisonment of up to three months, or both, depending on the offence.

The DMP urged all citizens to cooperate in maintaining traffic discipline and ensuring safe and smooth movement on Dhaka’s roads.
