JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - A delegation led by Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan today met Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and demanded immediate arrest of the accused in an attempted rape and murder case involving a female student on the campus.
The meeting was held around 1:30 pm at the Home Minister’s office at the Bangladesh Secretariat and lasted for about an hour.
The delegation included JU Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu and Joint General Secretary (Female) Ayesha Siddiqua Meghla.
Confirming the matter to BSS, Prof Kamrul Ahsan said that although steps had been taken by authorities, the accused had not yet been arrested.
He said ensuring justice in the case was a legitimate demand of the students, which prompted the meeting with the Home Minister.
“The Home Minister has taken the issue very seriously. I hope we will see positive progress within a week,” Prof. Kamrul added.
He further said the Home Minister instructed relevant law enforcement agencies to take necessary steps for the prompt arrest of the accused and assured close monitoring of the case.
“We called for swift measures in dealing with previously filed campus-based criminal cases and submitted a list of such cases to the Home Minister,” said the VC, seeking cooperation to ensure safety and security within campus and adjacent areas.
Earlier, on May 12, a female student of the university was allegedly subjected to an attempted rape and murder by an outsider near the abandoned Fazilatunnesa Hall.
Since then, students from all groups, including JUCSU, have been demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused.
However, the accused remains at large even after 21 days of the incident.
