Santal Rebellion Day observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, JULY 02, 2026 (BSS) - The 171st Santal Rebellion Day was observed yesterday in the Santal settlement area of Gobindaganj upazila in the district, with a call to ensure the rights of the Santal in society. 

Marking the day, the men of the Santal community chalked out elaborate programmes under the banner of Sahebganj Bagda Farm Bhumi Uddhar Sangram Committee. 

In the morning, a rally was held around 10 am in this connection; the floral wreaths were placed at the Shaheed Bedi.

Then a post-rally discussion meeting was held with Philimon Bask, president of the committee, in the chair. Rafael Hasda, Abdul Aziz, Bitish Saren, Anisur Rahman, Aminhemrom, Olivia Hemrom, Saheb Murmu, Anjali Murmu and Sheuli Tudu addressed the meeting, among others. 

The speakers said that even after 50 years of independence, Santals are still deprived of their rightful rights.

Three Santals were killed in 2016, but the trial of the murderers was not conducted; they also said. 

They demanded that the trial of the Santal murder to the government without delay. 

They also demanded that the government take necessary initiative to return their ancestral land to help them lead decent lives.
