
DHAKA, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS)- Environment, Forest and Climate Change State Minister Shaikh Faridul Islam today said concerted efforts are needed to turn tree plantation into a sustainable social movement to protect the environment and biodiversity.
"Tree plantation must be turned into a sustainable social movement to address the adverse impacts of climate change, conserve biodiversity and maintain the country's environmental balance," he said.
The state minister said this while addressing the third meeting of the supporting task force of the National Tree Plantation Cell, formed to implement the '25 crore trees in five years' programme.
The meeting was held at the meeting room of the ministry at Bangladesh Secretariat.
He said all concerned ministries, divisions, departments, agencies and public and private organisations must work in coordination to make the government's '25 crore trees in five years' programme a success.
He stressed ensuring proper care and maintenance of each sapling and monitoring the survival rate.
He emphasized planting indigenous fruit, forest and medicinal tree species suitable for local weather, soil quality and environmental conditions.
The meeting was informed that a plan has been adopted to plant a total of 5 crore 14 lakh 88 thousand 930 saplings in 2026.
Besides, various other ministries, divisions, agencies and NGOs are planting saplings according to their respective targets.
The meeting was informed that this year's target is expected to be achieved through planting mangrove species in coastal areas next December.
Officials of the concerned ministries, offices and departments were present at the meeting.
