DHAKA, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh swimmers clinched four medals, including one gold, two silver and one bronze, at the World Long Distance Swimming Championship 2026 held in Murshidabad, India. 

The championship was held on September 6 with three events - 19-kilometre men's, 19-kilometre women's and 81-kilometre men's.

A total of 28 swimmers competed in the 81-kilometre men's event, 36 in the 19-kilometre men's event and 15 in the 19-kilometre women's event.

According to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate here tonight, nine Bangladeshi swimmers participated in the championship, with six taking part in the 19-kilometre events and three in the 81-kilometre event.

Army swimmer Faisal Ahmed won gold in the 19-kilometre men's event, while Navy swimmer Sonia Akter secured silver in the 19-kilometre women's event.

In the 81-kilometre men's event, Navy swimmer Palash Chowdhury won silver and Army swimmer Nur Islam clinched bronze.

The achievement has brought pride to Bangladesh and is expected to inspire further development of long-distance swimming in the country, the ISPR release added.
