DHAKA, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS) - Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) has strengthened its security screening system by installing 25 advanced explosive trace detectors capable of identifying minute traces of explosives and illicit narcotic substances.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) installed the NUCTECH TR2000DC Explosive Trace Detectors (ETDs) as part of its efforts to make the airport's security arrangements more modern, effective and technology-driven, according to a press release issued this evening.
A specialised local training programme on operating the newly installed equipment has also been completed for selected Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel.
A total of 44 AVSEC officials and employees participated in the training, conducted by experts from the equipment's original manufacturer.
The participants received practical knowledge and skills in properly operating the devices, collecting samples, carrying out detection procedures, analysing results and maintaining operational safety.
The NUCTECH TR2000DC uses Ion Mobility Spectrometry technology and a non-radioactive ionisation source to detect tiny traces of explosives and illegal narcotic substances.
The devices will help security personnel rapidly identify suspicious substances on passenger baggage, cargo and different surfaces.
CAAB said the technology would enhance the airport's explosives and narcotics detection capability, improve the effectiveness of security screening and enable the swift identification of potential threats.
It will complement the existing security arrangements and further reinforce HSIA's multi-layered security system, it added.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen the airport's security preparedness ahead of an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization scheduled for November 2026.
CAAB said the combined application of modern technology, skilled personnel and effective security procedures would help keep the airport's security arrangements aligned with international standards.
Similar training programmes will be organised in phases at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and Cox's Bazar International Airport.
CAAB said it would continue initiatives to modernise airport security, enhance technological capabilities, develop skilled personnel and ensure safe civil aviation operations in line with international standards.
