BARISHAL, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - A fugitive convict sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case has been arrested after 18 years in Gazipur.

The arrested man was identified as Jahangir Howlader, son of Hossain Howlader of Khagerchar area under Hizla upazila of Barishal district.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-8) arrested him during an operation in Pubail Police Station area of Gazipur late Tuesday night.

RAB-8 Media Officer Lt Commander Shahriar Rifat Abhi confirmed the matter to BSS this afternoon.

He said a murder case was filed against Jahangir at Hizla Police Station in 2008. Following the trial, a court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment and fined him Taka 10,000, with an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

As Jahangir had remained absconding for a long time, the court issued an arrest warrant against him, the RAB official said.

He said Jahangir had managed to remain in hiding for 18 years using various tactics. Based on intelligence information and with the help of information technology, RAB-8 identified his location and conducted the operation that led to his arrest.

Jahangir was handed over to Pubail Police Station in Gazipur for further legal action, the RAB official added.
