MAGURA, Sept 20, 2025 (BSS) - Aiming to reintroduce the century-old tradition
of rural Bengal to the younger generation, a colorful festival of stick-
fighting (Lathi khela) was held on the Talkhari Secondary School ground in
Shalikha upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The event, organised amid much enthusiasm, drew large crowds from different
parts of the district. Four teams from Magura, Jhenaidah and Shailkupa
participated in the competition, showcasing their skills in the traditional
stick-fighting, locally known as lathi khela.

Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the spectacular displays of stick
maneuvers, performed in synchronization with the rhythmic beat of traditional
drums.

The skilled lathials (stick fighters), equipped with colorful costumes and
batons, enthralled the audience with their energetic performances.

The festival ground was surrounded by rows of traditional stalls and local
vendors, giving the event the appearance of a rural fair (gramer mela),
creating a festive atmosphere for people of all ages.

"I watched the stick play for the first time with my mother and really
enjoyed it," said Sumaiya, a student of Talkhari Secondary School. "The way
they moved to the beat of the drums and clashed the batons was amazing," she
added.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahiduzzaman Chand, general secretary of the
Shalikha Upazila Press Club, said the festival plays a significant role in
preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of rural Bangladesh.

He said that such a festival also fosters community bonding and generates
fresh enthusiasm among the people of the country.

The event was attended, among others, by former member secretary of Shalikha
Upazila BNP and district BNP member Munshi Moniruzzaman and district BNP
member Motaleb Hossain Sikder.
